I was having a great discussion with folks about the interesting things some people (often family) say to postpartum people. While we laughed about it, I don’t want to discredit that some statements are really harmful.

Sometimes you don’t know what to say to a new parent who has spit up on their shirt, dark circles under their eyes and dishes piled everywhere. One tip, off the top, is to have empathy, compassion and to center the parent (as opposed to it being all about the baby).

Rather than stating the obvious without offering a solution, offer help. Whether it’s a nonjudgmental ear, a babysitter while they shower or nap, unloading the dishwasher or a meal - help.

The image has some suggestions for supportive phrases. I hope you find them useful!

Today, we honor the legacy of Black Midwives across the diaspora, and we lift up pioneering Missouri Midwife-Mariah Watkins. “Aunt Mariah” was a Black midwife whose impact shaped generations. Born into slavery in 1824, Mariah defied the odds to become a respected midwife, healer, and landowner in Neosho, Missouri. She delivered hundreds of babies, cared for families across racial and economic lines, and mentored a young George Washington Carver, inspiring his lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

This powerful history is brought to light through research and oral history by Okunsola M. Amadou, Missouri’s first Black Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and founder of Jamaa Birth Village. Jamaa represents the continuation of Black midwifery traditions, providing culturally centered maternal care and advocating for Black birth justice. Mariah’s legacy is a testament to the resilience, wisdom, and care that Black midwives have provided for centuries, and continue to provide today.

Midwife & Water Priestess Okunsola M. Amadou @themidwiferyfolklorist, is a Library Research Intern at the Missouri Historical Society as she completes her Museum Studies program. She has co-created a Women’s History Month Pop-Up Exhibit at the Missouri Historical Society Library & Research Center, which features Mariah’s full story, a midwife she honors, celebrates and greatly respects.

Should that be the expectation? HELL NO.

We do a disservice to all new parents by painting a picture of rainbows and unicorns. TikTok creator, @nursehannahbh shared her (now viral) “17 diapers” video revealing that she had accumulated 17 dirty diapers around her house in a single day.

This video resonated with many parents, highlighting the often overwhelming and chaotic nature of postpartum life. Some people (naturally) chose to criticize her but more people joined her and share their own experiences. This trend underscores the need for open discussions about the challenges of parenting and the importance of community support for new parents.

I meet newly postpartum people all the time who feel shamed, alone, and self-judgement because they are finding postpartum to be hard and not at all “the happiest time of their lives”. I never want to paint a picture of doom and gloom. As a postpartum doula, a fellow parent, and a compassionate human means being willing to listen without judgement, validate people’s feelings and their journey, and offer specific support. You will be amazed how much you can change someone’s life by just affirming that their feelings are normal and they are NOT a bad parent.

❄︎ 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean; the largest effect was seen with a doula (39% decrease)*
❄︎ 8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth; the largest effect was seen with a doula (15% increase)
❄︎ 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief; the type of person providing continuous support did not make a difference
❄︎ Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average

Postpartum doula care is also essential to supporting the family during their transition into parenthood.

Gift certificates can be used for childbirth education, prenatal and labor support or postpartum care. They can be purchased in any denomination.

In July, I was blessed to be partnered with a newly trained doula, Idman, while we supported a courageous, strong woman as she labored and birthed her son. Idman had recently completed her doula training with @birthing_solidarity_ through a pilot program at @inherpresence.

Major events in our lives such as weddings, births, buying a home, etc can test your boundaries.

Waves are often seen as symbols of change.

As I grow in my clarity for my business, the birthworker I want to be, and how I want to show up for others, I am embracing positive changes.

This summer I’ve supported four mamas (which is how they identify) and I love that moment when they truly believe in their innate inner strength. When you see that change in energy and they get into their rhythm. I love supporting people in remembering their power.

I am excited to share the work that is happening behind the scenes but for now I’ll just leave this little love note. I love all of your enthusiasm and support. ❤️

A grandmother meeting her first grandchild while witnessing the strength of her daughter, a sister becoming an Auntie for the first time, an amazing team of nurses & doctors, and of course, two amazing parents, excited to meet their little one.

I’ve decided to launch this sweet change on the autumn equinox (9/22/24) so 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐝!

Why wouldn’t we say “natural birth”?! What’s wrong with that?

So, the word isn’t 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 but we stand on this: 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡.

Whether you choose to labor without pain medication or with medication.
Whether you give birth vaginally or through your belly.

It is all natural. It is all valid. There are no shortcuts.

We support all choices and we celebrate every birthing person who listens to their body and is empowered in making choices that give them the best birth 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.

When I hear someone say “natural birth “, I (Jess), respond using terms like “unmediated” or “surgical”. I don’t want to correct anyone or shame them but I introduce a different way of wording because language is powerful!

Birth is tough stuff and no one should try to diminish the experience of any birthing person. Hopefully this plants a little seed 🌱 for you. When you hear yourself or someone else use this language, can you redirect the language and the messaging?

Little changes add up! 💜💜
